Firstly some good news, HQ The Cheshire Cheese is now open again under new management. Alex Wright has taken over from Terry Stanton. Alex worked the bar for Terry and has decided to give it a go and has some ambitious plans for the pub. We wish him well in his venture. We also wish Terry & Angela Stanton good wishes with their plans, and hope you get to some interesting destinations in your RV.
The club has had a couple of river matches recently. First off was the River Weaver at Barnton. Recent match results from the Weaver had shown prolific Bream weights, well all that ended when we got there. Our match was won by Dave Williams with 2 lb odd and his son Paul was second. Most of us sat it out for Bream which failed to respond. It was a strange 4 seasons in one day sort of day. A local angler fishing one of the renowned Bream pegs also failed to catch any so it wasn't just us. As anglers we all know the "should have been here last week" days.
Unfortunately this luck followed us to the River Severn where we fished the County Ground section. We all struggled catching bits with the odd larger Perch showing. Winner Mark Holden got a bonus Barbel from a peg just above the footbridge. It weighed 9 lb and meant he was well in front. One guest angler lost a large Eel at the net. Dave Williams came 2nd and Johnny Finch picked up the 3rd spot. Peter Williams who loves his river fishing was a DNW so shows how hard it was. I also did not trouble the scales-man. I got a phone call on Sunday from Andy Jones who is helping to run Shrewsbury Town Fisheries that now control the local fishing, he enquired about our day and pointed out that the County Ground historically fishes hard in bright weather. It was bright sunshine all day. He also said we were a little early as the river fishes better later in the year. We will keep that in mind for the future.
On a brighter note the coach driver stopped at The Grapes pub just outside Shrewsbury so we could drown our sorrows for an hour. I would also like to thank the lads who stopped for a quick pint in HQ when we got back. It shows our support for the new landlord and helps promote the social side of the club.
Last but not least the next Mersey match is on Sunday 29th September, 08:00 am on the bank for the draw.
