If you weren’t at the last meeting or the message grapevine has not reached you then note. This year’s club AGM is scheduled for Sunday 11th December. Venue as usual is HQ, The Cheshire Cheese Pub, Knutsford Road, Latchford. We will meet at 12:00 pm for a drink downstairs before the meeting proper, upstairs. Once again, the club will provide the first drink and like last year Johnny Finch said he would provide some nibbles for after (the Sausage Rolls were memorable last year).
Hope to see you there. As regards fishing, some hardy individuals are still managing to stage Mersey matches on a Sunday. The weights are slowly dropping along with the temperature, but Dave Williams won one match with 22 lb of fish a couple of weeks back. Bream to 5 lb have been showing. Dave’s weight might be a new 5 Hour Match Record for our stretch. “Tight Lines” A few results from September.

A lot of Pike activity too. Weaver, Barnton 03/09/2022 1st Keith Atkinson 5lb 7oz 2nd Allen Jones 3lb 11oz 3rd Keith Kerwin 3lb 6oz Hampton Springs 17/09/2022 1st Keith Kerwin 28lb 2nd Keith Atkinson 20lb 14oz 3rd Dave Williams 18lb 7oz We have come to the end of our official 2022 Match List but are continuing Sunday Mersey matches until either the weather or attendance dictate carrying them on. One thing to note that it was voted, at the October meeting, to change the draw time for the Mersey to 09:00 am on the car park. “Tight Lines” Apologies again as I play catch-up with my posting. My, and I suspect a good many members, attention has been focused on the coming winter and energy pricing. Thankfully we all enjoy fishing where we can take our minds of everyday worries and sit in quiet contemplation for a few hours.
The river Mersey, well what can I say, normally it starts slow and doesn’t produce until September. This year it kicked off from opening day and is still fishing it’s socks off. Winning match weights have been consistently good and back up weights all along the stretch have kept everyone in with a chance. Latest reports indicate one or two Bream are now showing up and Dace have put in an appearance this season. The river has been low and slow through the summer due to the weather. It will be interesting to see how it fishes once we get a bit of rain. The lock on the venue has been changed so a Bailiff will meet us and open the gates. The following weekend we have the second of our 60th Anniversary Matches. This is for the River men and is on our stretch of the Mersey. “Tight Lines” Next Sundays match at Greenwood Pool has been moved onto the Big Lake. The meet time has also been changed by the members at the June meeting. It is now 09:00 am at Greenwood. This will also be in effect for all our commercials matches.
The Mersey will continue to be at 08:00 am. It was felt that now the club membership covers a wide area of the Northwest it was hard for some to get there at eight. Please pass this message on to anyone without internet access. See you there (at nine) "Tight Lines". Well, we have had just over a month of the new river season and, surprisingly, it has been good news. Unlike the last few years our stretch of the Mersey has started in good form. In recent seasons it has taken a couple of months before consistent catches had been reported but this year it has fished well since the off, although like any water some people catch more than others. No Bream have been reported but Roach, Perch, and an increase in Dace, have all turned up. I had a Rudd in my last match. Three matches have been fished and, ahem, I managed to win the first two. Sadly I was “hors de combat” for the third which was won by Paul Williams. Results were :- 19/06/2022 Phil Newton 3 lb 1 oz Dave Williams 1 lb 10 oz John Crosland 1 lb 10 oz 10/07/2022 Phil Newton 8 lb 13 oz Dave Henry 4 lb 14 oz Keith Atkinson 4 lb 9 oz 17/07/2022 Paul Williams 11 lb 14 oz Dave Williams 5 lb 15 oz John Crosland 5 lb 10 oz Nice net of fish for Paul We recently had our first 60th Anniversary Match at Hampton Springs. It was won by Phil Colefield who had an eventful day, as well as winning he had to take a dip in the lake to retrieve his Top 5 which had fallen off. 02/07/2022 Phil Colefield 31 lb 5 oz Keith Kirwen 24 lb 15 oz Alan Jones 17 lb 9 oz Here is Phil getting his £60 Anniversary Prize from Howard We will be having another 60th Anniversary match on the Mersey in September.
Next match is at Greenwood Pools, Big Lake, on Sunday 24th July. “Tight Lines” The Glorious 16th beckons. The river season reopens on Thursday and a few of the lads have been working on the pegs during the close season. Dave & Paul Williams especially need our thanks for their work in peg rebuilding and for giving all the pegs a pre-season strim. The river usually starts slow but you never know until you try it. We have had several Stillwater matches recently, at Greenwood, Limbrick Fishery near Chorley, Hampton Springs and at Dunham Fishery.
Greenwood Lagoon 1st Keith Kirwen 12 lb 0 oz 2nd Mark Holden 11 lb 6 oz 3rd Paul Williams 6 lb 1 oz Limbrick Fishery 1st Phil Colefield 19 lb 12 oz 2nd Darren Kinsey 18 lb 1 oz 3rd Keith Kirwen 16 lb 5 oz A very cold, blustery, easterly was blowing on the day and this kept weights down. All who fished said this is one for the future. Hampton Springs, Willow Pool 1st Keith Kirwen 41 lb 5 oz 2nd John Crosland 35 lb 3rd Alan Jones 34 lb Dunham Fishery 1st Keith Kirwen 28 lb 11 oz 2nd Paul Williams 17 lb 10 oz 3rd Tony Shaw 14 lb 12 oz I think we are going to have to break Keith’s pole to give the rest of us a chance. Hope to see you on the banks of the Mersey “Tight Lines” Just a heads up to tell members that the June meeting will be on Wednesday 1st June. Alex, landlord of the Cheshire Cheese, asked us to bring it forward as he has arranged live music in the function room for the 2nd. This is due to the four day Bank Holiday weekend for the Queens Jubilee. Could you please pass this message on. If interested I believe the music is an Amy Winehouse Tribute.
On a fishy front, Committee member, Dave Williams, has been keeping busy during the close season renovating several pegs on our stretch of the Mersey at Rixton. Thanks go to Dave and his helpers. Here is renovated Peg 9 "Tight Lines" Just a quick note for info.
We fished on the Weaver at Winsford before the end of the river season and it was icy cold. With the river running through and highly coloured the Winsford Match Sec (Steve Flood) allowed us to pick another stretch. We settled on the Aerosol length but although sunny an icy upstream wind kept weights low. 1st Keith Kirwen 4 lb 11 oz 2nd Paul Williams 1 lb 5 oz I think everyone caught but did not bother weighing. Our second match of the year was on the Lagoon at Greenwood Fishery. “H” had bumped into Julian the owner who passed on news that it was fishing well, especially in the exceptionally mild weather we had been having. Come match day and it was back to winter, c’est la vie. 1st Keith Kirwen 12 lb 0 oz 2nd Mark Holden 11 lb 6 oz 3rd Paul Williams 6 lb 1 oz Again all who fished did catch but mainly silvers. After the match the members expressed displeasure that the next match was not until May and so at the April meeting it was voted to add another venue to the list. In lieu of this I have booked the following Limbrick Fishery Long Lane, Heath Charnock, Chorley, PR6 9EF, Lancashire It is a doughnut shaped pool with a central island and holds the usual species including Carp and F1’s. Usual time is 08:00 am at the venue but there is a butty van on site for breakfast so we can have a leisurely build up to the all-in. I hope to see as many of you there as are able. “Tight Lines” First of all a belated “Happy New Year”
January was a tad barren of fishy news to relate in the Blog plus both myself and Chairman Pete McNamara came down with Covid and had to isolate (not together before any rumours start). Now as we plod through February, I can start adding a few entries. This year, 2022, is the 60th Anniversary for the club. Founded in 1962 by a bunch of steel erectors looking for something to do after their amateur rugby days came to an end. With their pranks, antics, and total lack of fishing ability it was lucky to survive the first 12 months. But survive it did, and really grew when they decided to invest in their own coach transport. Joining Birmingham Anglers Association further expanded the club’s vistas. The coaches (for indeed there were several) eventually traversed England, Wales, Scotland and the Emerald Isle in search of fish and a good Craic. Things changed over the years, members came and went, the fishing was good and bad but we fisherman always have an excuse for that. We had club waters, farm ponds in Hatton, and currently our River Mersey stretch at Rixton. With an aging membership and the passing of Chairman Eric Seed and Secretary Peter Hinley the club was at its lowest ebb for years. Howard “Aitch” Jones took on most of the committee tasks and initiated a complete rethink of how we run the club. We pulled our horns in and in 2016 sold off the club coach concentrating on local fishing plus our Mersey asset. Since then, we have levelled off the membership at a number that suits, with some who just fish the river while others participate in a lively match itinerary. I (Phil Newton) have become Secretary and Peter McNamara took on the Chairman’s role. All this leads us to being 60 years on and how we propose to celebrate it. We have decided to have two 60th Anniversary Matches. One will be on the River Mersey and the other at Hampton Springs Fishery. Both matches will have a club donated £60 Prize for the winners. The dates have not been finalised yet, but I will keep members informed. Also, the Mersey match will incorporate a BBQ on the bank after the match . Finally for this blog entry here is this years Match List. Dates are flexible for the River Mersey matches and we may well add more still water venues depending on demand. Match List 2022 Sat 5th March River Weaver, Winsford Marina.
